Admission for Degree and Diploma

HIT Program Application

  • Students must submit a separate by June 1 to be considered for Fall admission or by October 1 to be considered for Spring admission into the degree or diploma programs of study.
  • Students who select the Degree program of study should complete the HIT Medical Form within the first semester after admission. Students will not be allowed to register for HIT 224 Professional Practice Experience IV until the medical form is submitted and complete.
  • Applicants must submit a completed medical form, including required immunizations and titers, to Health Sciences Administrative Assistant II at jacquesa@edgecombe.edu. Please review the Clinical Requirements for more information.

Academic Eligibility & GPA Requirements

To be considered for admission into the Health Information Technology (HIT) Degree or Diploma programs, applicants must meet the following academic standards:

  • Core Course Performance: Applicants must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 across specific prerequisite curriculum courses. These courses must be completed by the end of the semester preceding your intended program start date:
    • HIT Associate Degree (A45360): Includes BIO 163 (or BIO 168), MED 121, and HIT 110.
    • HIT Coding Diploma (D45360A): Includes BIO 163 (or BIO 168), MED 121, and HIT 114.
  • General Education Standard: A minimum GPA of 2.5 is required for all HIT-related general education coursework completed at any accredited institution prior to admission.
  • The highest grade attained in attempted courses is used in the GPA calculation for admission.
  • Applicants who do not have a 2.5 Admission GPA are advised to:
    • Retake C level course work or take additional HIT general education courses to raise their GPA to 2.5 and re-apply to the program OR
    • Apply to one or more of the certificate programs of study. Course grades from the certificates will transfer to the degree and diploma, which allows the student to earn a credential while raising their GPA until reapplying to the degree or diploma programs of study.
    • Maintaining an overall 2.0 GPA on all attempted courses at ECC, if applicable.

Admission Steps for Degree and Diploma Applicants

Step I:  Application process (Due July 1 for Fall Admission and October 1 for Spring Admission)

Submit

  • An online ECC
  • Official high school transcripts or equivalency
  • A partial transcript if currently enrolled in high school. A final transcript must be submitted at the time of graduation.
  • Official transcripts from all colleges attended
  • A completed HIT Program application

Step II:  Conditional Acceptance

Applicants who receive a conditional acceptance letter must:

  • Accept or reject the seat in writing by e-mail to the Health Information Technology Admissions Counselor by the date specified in the letter.
  • Have submitted a completed medical form, including required immunizations and titers, to Health Sciences Administrative Assistant II and provide any missing or illegible information on the medical form upon request.

Step IV: Final Acceptance

Applicants are fully accepted upon:

  • Maintaining a minimum 2.5 Admission GPA on all attempted HIT curriculum general education course work.
  • Maintaining an overall 2.0 GPA on all attempted courses at ECC, if applicable.

Other Admission Information

  • Students who plan to apply for a scholarship, loan, or Pell grant should check with Financial Aid to determine eligibility after applying for a FAFSA.
  • Submission of an HIT medical form in no way implies that the student has been accepted by the HIT program.
  • At any point after admission, if more than one year lapses without course enrollment, students must reapply to the HIT program.
  • In order to complete HIT 224, the PPE, students must complete criminal background and drug screen requirements of the agencies at the student’s expense. Upon their review of the results, the clinical agency has the right to deny the student’s placement at their site according to the same review process used for new employee hires. If denied placement by a clinical site, the student will be ineligible to continue in the HIT program.
