ECC Celebrates Black History Month with a Focus on African American Women
Synthia Kearney, battalion chief with the Gastonia Fire Department, will deliver special remarks during the virtual Black History Month celebration at 91ӣƵ. Join the Zoom event at 12 p.m. on February 11 through the URL edgecombe.edu/black-history2021.
91ӣƵ will host a virtual celebration of Black History Month on Thursday, February 11, at 12 p.m.
The theme is “Expanding Career Horizons for African American Women in Our Community.”

Synthia Kearney, battalion chief with the Gastonia Fire Department, will deliver keynote remarks. Kearney has been with the Gastonia Fire Department for about 15 years. She was named battalion chief in 2012. Prior to joining the fire department, she was a special agent with the U.S. Treasury Department.
Minister Willie Moore of Word Tabernacle Church will perform several musical selections during the event. ECC Student Ambassador Nahdia Sharp will read a special selection.
ECC staff Dr. Greg McLeod, Michael Jordan, LaShawnda Washington, Viola Harris, Varnell Kinnin, and Desmond Sykes also will participate in the celebration through remarks and music.
Members of the audience will have opportunities to win prizes.
The virtual Black History Month event is sponsored by ECC’s Division of College and Career Readiness and the Student Government Association.
